COVID-19 information Dr. Melina Diaz is double board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. She earned her medical degree with Summa Cum Laude honors from La Universidad del Zulia in Venezuela. She then completed Internal Medicine Internship, Residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Diaz joined Metro Infectious Disease Consultants, the largest Infectious Disease Group in the country, in 2017. She currently works as an Infectious Disease Consultant for Southern Regional Medical Center and Piedmont Hospital System. Dr. Diaz is also the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship for those institutions. She is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America. She currently offers her services inpatient, in the clinic setting and via telehealth. Dr. Diaz frequently acts as a medical detective, called in to evaluate and oversee challenging cases, difficult diagnoses and infections not responding to treatment. Her special interests are fever of unknown origin, skin and soft tissue infections, fungal infections and HIV. Since the COVID pandemic started, Dr Diaz, has been in charge of hundreds of patients with severe COVID infection. She coordinates their early isolation, rapid testing, research-backed drug treatments, and at the same time, makes sure to prevent the spread of the infection inside the hospital to the rest of the health care workers.
